Dear Bill and family,
We have been following your trials and tribulations during all this time. How wonderful that you will in the near future get rid of your button and be able to taste the food you eat.  Though Ensure is a flavorful liquid
you would soon  want some congri or such to calm your hunger. What a loving family you have had around you these past few weeks. You must be  reaping some rewards for the love and attention you extended in the past. Bien hecho! Just to attempt to emulate you, in a small way, I (Ian) had my gall bladder out a couple of weeks ago. It was something that just came along and finally had to go. I am fine, having had the care and attention that my media naranja. At home now renewing my activities bit by bit. Muchos abrazos and enjoy those new bites you will have. Food is good!!!! Con mucho cariño, Marilyn and Ian

June 19   Good morning Bill Butler,

Remember me, Terri Madden's friend Carol Davis, from New Jersey? I had sent a email to Sue when I heard of your hospitalization from Terri. Have been keeping you in my good thoughts for a speedy recovery.

I have been following your health update and am glad to read that you are improving. In addition, I have now read many of your articles. I especially like the stories in your teenage years, sailing at the Havana Yacht Club and around the island. They were so descriptive, I could see you smiling in the sun, as you navigated your way through the beautiful, clear waters of you beloved Cuba. I always enjoyed listening to your stories when you would stop by Terr's shop. Also, the beautiful cd that Terri passed along to me of your beautiful Cuban music and we call it Bill Butler's Favourites. I enjoy the music so much and so did my beloved mother, Veronica. I played it for her every night when she lived with me during her illness. Thank you for such a beautiful compilation of music, it became my mother's lullabyes, each night before bed, we would dance around the room, twirling to the beautiful words and rythmns...

Bless you and keep you, Bill Butler and have a total healing. As the Irish say, " May the Wind be always at your back."....................... Warmest wishes, Carol Davis Big Blondie

June 19
So glad to read you are doing better , Bill.  What an odisea for you, incredible. Looks like you are on your way slowly but surely, for which so many are thankful...
Hope Lirio is feeling better too...   thank God for little things.!!! Jaqueline Camejo

J. Lucy

June 14   Hello Godfather Bill,

I sure hope I am living half the active life you have been living when I am in my 70s. Just spoke to Joe a few minutes ago and here your recovering OK. Our prayers have been with you since getting the email last week. I hope the hospital staff and food is OK, but I am sure you would much rather be home with Liro, a good cold beer and a plate of black beans and rice. Here is wishing that comes true sooner than later.

Your Godson, Zach

Hang In There

Hello, my friend; You’re on my mind,
Because you're somehow ailing,
But your response to any challenge
Has always been unfailing.

So I’m confident you’ll win again;
Hang in there, and you’ll see;
You’ll be back on top in no time,
Tackling life courageously.

With best wishes for a speedy recovery,  Dave Schuster

June 10   Dear Bill We have been monitoring your progress via the website, and are delighted that you are hungry, thirsty, living, breathing, and probably becoming a pain in the ass - necessary in the fight for autonomy leaving the hospital. Dick recently spent several days in the hospital  - but is home, eating, drinking, sleeping and even went to church this morning!  The ICU is a great service when you need it, but it is not a great place to spend a great deal of time! We hope that your recovery proceeds well and that you get to return home on your own steam soon. Much love and abrazos to all   Barbara S-T and Dick Lloyd

June 8   Good morning from Ohio, I was out of town and just returned home to see the email that Bill is in the hospital. When I read the health update from Wednesday I was glad to see that he is improving and hope that my thoughts and prayers, added to the many others, will help speed his recovery. I first encountered 66 Days Adrift when my wife and I owned a bookstore in Orrville, Ohio. After I finished the book I sent Bill an email telling him it was one of the most exciting...and scary...books I had ever read. One of my pipe dreams was to learn how to sail but after reading the book I decided to keep my feet firmly planted on solid earth. I still hope to see the movie! Please convey my best wishes. I will check the health updates daily. Charles Sides

June 8   We are praying for your prompt recovery Tere and Nando Saenz

Hey Cubiche,  I just heard you were in the hospital with pneumonia.  You must have gotten it while rummaging around in some old locker searching for a long lost bottle of rum.  Ho ho.  Helen and I hope you will be up and about soon, and driving Lirio nuts as usual.  We have been missing our annual visits with you and Lirio, and we were hoping you two might pass through the Atlanta area in your summer travels.  Please come for a visit, the guest room is brand new and just waiting for you to break it in.  There is even an “Olive Garden” here in Athens, Georgia, along with a lot of other good restaurants for us to try.   Our very best wishes for a speedy recovery, and we hope to see you soon, John and Helen

PS:  If you come for a visit you can meet your newest “groupie”.  Helen’s mother, Alice, is staying with us and she was fascinated by your book.

May 31   Dear Bill, We have heard from your daughter Susan through the courtesy of  Li Hilpman that you are currently a guest at Jackson Memorial. You must stop this nonsense immediately. Look at what you have been through. A little rumcito should cut this malady quickly. Unfortunately I have been hospitalized recently, but am currently on work release and reasonably well.  All kidding aside I am sure someone will read this to you and you will soon be up and around.  Best of luck, fool the scientists, be nice to your nurses and ask Susan to keep us up to date.  Abraos, sus amigos, Barbara and Dick Lloyd

May 31   Dear Bill, I just learned that you are temporarily in "dry dock". Sorry to hear that. It usually means that someone is always sticking things in you or at you, and there isn't any way to fight back. Get well real quick so you can get the wind abeam or abaft, and get out of that place, unless, of course, there are three shifts of good looking nurses which might make you want to linger. All kidding aside, Bill, Roselyn and I hope you get well soon, and are back at the helm in short order. ORZA !!!! From your Brother and Classmate, Sam Britton

May 28   Dear Bill, Just got a note, through Sam Dysart, that your kind daughter sent. You have bounced back many times in the past and we are certain this will be another one. With our warmest hopes for your prompt and complete recovery, Con mucho cariño, Marilyn and Ian

May 28   Oh my goodness, Susan, what news you bear! We will be praying for Bill's recovery from now until you tell us he's okay. I'm glad he's been moved to intensive care, as that's the least infectious place in the hospital - pneumonia is so very serious in people our age. I'll send a copy of your msg to a few of your dad's friends - Chips Lazo, my sister Marilyn, brother Ted and Ann Hutchison are the ones I have email addresses for

We'll be writing him, but when you talk with him next please tell him we love him and are thinking of him.

May 28   Susan – Our prayers go out to Bill and to you and family. I sent out your prayer request to the 288 guys from the prayer muffin. Keep us posted and if there is anything you need, do not hesitate to call.  God Bless, Howard Werner, St. Louis Catholic church, Miami

May 28   Dear Susan - and Lirio and Bill. Thank you so much Sue for letting us know re your Dad. Perhaps he is doing some better by now. Can't imagine him "sick", but we're all at that vulnerable age. We're "pulling" for all of you and may he make a recovery. Please do keep us adv ised. Marci Powers

May 28   Bummer!! Sorry to hear that, but he's a tough bird that's been through worse storms. Non the less, I'll keep him in my prayers. Thanks for letting me know of his condition. Tell me if I can be of help to send emails to other old friends from Manila about his condition. Lenny

  Sue,

I'm the head coach for the Purdue Crew. I have had the very special pleasure of meeting your father several times and we have communicated via email several times.

I am so sorry that he is not doing very well. I received an email from Brian Failing who manages our email lists and eNews articles. I'll check the website, www.wbutler.com for updates on Bill's health.

I am presently at the IRA (Intercollegiate Rowing Association) Regatta in Camden, NJ with the Varsity Men's 8. This regatta is the National Championship for men's rowing.

Following Purdue win on the Dad Vail Regatta, we were invited to compete with the best other 23 crews in the country for the national title.

You can follow the V8s progress by going to row2k.com, look for updates on IRA Regatta, it will be on their front page. They will give results and progression to the grand finals.

It is great what your father and other began back in 1949 or so. I know he will appreciate how much Purdue Crew has accomplished. Although Purdue Crew has done very well in the recent past, this year has been extremely special and your father was "one of the father's of Purdue Crew". I am so happy that he and the other got things going and have helped to sustain the program through its growth to national prominence that Purdue Crew enjoys today.

In lieu of a card for your father, here is a website address that has video footage of the men's V8 win at the Dad Vail Regatta. It is the first time Purdue has ever won the regatta.

I just watch it for the first time. Along the footage is not so clear, the excitement and the result is "believable".

Here is also a link to row2k.com that has a write up on Purdue Crew at the Vails, http://www.row2k.com/features/features.cfm?action=read&ID=326.

You can also get some additional info on the Purdue Crew website, http://www.boilerrowing.com/crew/

Please give my very best to your father and let him know the V8 is pulling for him just as they pulled winning the Dad Vail V8 race.

Best wishes to you and to Bill.
